About this Item

Book. Elephant Folio - over 15. No 215 of 300 limitation, this being, with copies numbered 201 to 300 the more exclusive, with prints on velin d'Arches and mould-made paper with Philip Lehman's watermark specially manufactured by the Papeteries d'Arches (Vosges) . 105 plates, each measuring 19 by 15 inches, or 49 by 38 cm, all on a very heavy stock of paper, and each accompanied by tissue guard and a separate text page. Text pages with name of painting and artist on one side, text explanation, bibliographical reference on other. This collection formed the core of the Robert Lehman Collection donated to the Metropolitan Museum in 1969, today housed in its own wing of the museum. Vellum spine over vellum-colored cloth (or what might be a thinner vellum pasted to board). Gilt marbled endpapers, resembling a cross-section of a slab of granite. Large fox marks on blank preliminary page and title page, as well as final blank page. A lot of such foxing on a few of the table of contents pages and one page introduction by Robert Lehman. Afterward only occasional foxing, but such fox marks as there are tend to be splotchy. Most pages clean or essentially clean -- light foxing in foreedges sometimes diffused into page edge. All plates are attractive, and tissue guards are all intact, a few with creases resulting undoubtedly from heaviness and subsequent unwieldiness of book. Foxing as described is only issue with this extravagant production of a book, and but for it, the book would be deemed in fine condition. Still near fine. The book weighs about 22 pounds and so extra postage will be necessary. Bookseller Inventory # 000977

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
