Owned previously by Joshua Podro, famed Jewish Scholar.Study of Hebrew philology by Johann Leusden (1624-1699), a Dutch theologist and Hebraist, professor of Hebrew at the Utrecht University, who on top of his philological work, published together with the publisher Joseph Athias of Amsterdam a controversial edition of the bible.The book is accompanied by nine fine engraved plates depicting, among other things, the Tabernacle, as well as various Jewish customs ? baking Matzahs, lighting Sabbath candles, Chuppah and more. Chapters begin with illuminated lettering.Joshua Podro was born Joshua Podrushnik in Russia. After serving in the First World War and working as a journalist in New York he emigrated to England where he ran a press-cuttings agency. In 1936 he was elected one of the secretaries of the British section of the World Jewish Congress and in 1937 was a member of the Zionist Organisation Executive at the Twentieth Zionist Congress in Geneva. Joshua Podro was a distinguished scholar of Hebrew and Aramaic.
