About this Item

Clothbound. 12mo. VI, 120 pages. 20 cm. First Edition. In German. Decorative boards with gilt lettering on spine. Title roughly translates as: "Philosophy and Philosophical Writings of the Jews: A Historical Sketch. " A translation of Solomon Munk's "La Philosophie chez les Juifs" into German by Bernhard Beer, under the title "Philosophie und Philosophische Schriftsteller der Juden. " Salomon Munk (1803-1867) ; French Orientalist, philologist, archaeologist, and philosopher; he studied under Jacob Joseph Oettinger, E. Gans, Hegel, Freytag, Lassen; a friend of Leopold Zunz, E. W. Zumpt, Goethe, Michael Beer; a tutor of Gustave and Alphonse de Rothschild. In 1828 he left Germany for France without taking a degree, and "in 1838 he was appointed cataloguer of Hebrew, Chaldaic, Syriac, and Arabic manuscripts in the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris. Munk now devoted himself to the study of the Judæo-Arabic literature of the Middle Ages and to the works of Maimonides, more especially the latter's "Moreh Nebukim. " He went direct to the Arabic original, supplementing the texts he found at the Bibliothèque from texts he had copied at Oxford. At the same time he made a thorough study of Aristotle, who is constantly quoted by Maimonides. In this way he gathered the necessary material for his edition of the Arabic text of the "Moreh, " with translation and annotations, which he published in three large volumes, long after he had become blind (1856, 1861, 1866) . He had lost his eyesight in 1850 while in the course of cataloguing the Sanskrit and Hebrew manuscripts in the possession of the library. " (From the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia. ) Bernhard Beer (1801-1861) , the translator and commentator of this volume of Munk’s on Jewish Philosophy, was the first to introduce sermons in Germany as a volunteer preacher in Dresden, a volunteer educator, a scholar on biblical exegesis and Jewish philosophy of the middle ages, committed to a systematic Jewish theology; he is known for a newspaper he founded committed to Jewish emancipation in Saxony, and he collected a very valuable library. Subjects: Jewish philosophy. Light wear to edges of boards; pastedown of a 19th century bookseller in Amsterdam and some writing on endpages. Pages clean and crisp, but foxing throughout. Very good + condition. (GER-36-11). Bookseller Inventory # 28862
