About this Item

Introduction by Willard Huntington Wright. Grey cloth with gilt lettering. xxxiii, 1088pp. Very good. Tight, attractive later printing (ca. 1952) of Modern Library Giant #34, first published in 1937. Smudged ownership signature on front flyleaf (dated 1952) of college student Nancy Anderson, soon-to-be daughter-in-law of presidential candidate and Illinois governor Adlai E. Stevenson II and wife of future Illinois senator Adlai E. Stevenson III; she inks a few parentheses and a few words discreetly on a couple of leaves near the front of the book.
