First English edition (translated from the original, first Latin edition of 1831); 8 1/2 x 5 1/2; pp. [5], vi-xxxii, [3], 36-361, [3]; 3/4 polished calf and marbled boards; 5 raised bands, gilt, and embossed decorations to spine; illustrated with a large, fold-out map and a plate; a bit of wear and rubbing to edges and marbled paper; foxing to map and first few leaves only, else mostly very clean; very good condition. Bookplate of scientist, author, and antiquary Thomas Glazebrook Rylands to front board verso (also a small, manuscript signature of his son (?) T. Paul Rylands).Henry O'Brien (1808ΓΆβ β 1835) was an Irish author and classicist. Fluent in Latin and Greek, O'Brien translated the current book from Spanish priest and historian Joaquin Lorenzo Villanueva's (1757ΓΆβ β 1837) original edition, in which the latter attempted to prove the existence of an ancient Phoenician colonization of Ireland. 2.
