About this Item

first edition, printing not stated (probably the only printing of the first edition); SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR 'With best wishes / Peter Ladefoged' on the ffep; soft covers worn and soiled, spine covering wearing through, previous owner's stamp on front cover, pencilled underlinings and marginal notations, list of languages treated in the book attached with paper clip, covers and binding still reasonably tight, overall rating Poor to Fair; the previous owner, Raymond O. Silverstein, was my colleague in the linguistics department at Southern Illinois University in the early 1970s, a specialist in phonetics, and former student of Peter Ladefoged's at UCLA; Silverstein, who had had unforgetable experiences working in Nigeria, turned his back on academia about 1975 and went to Chicago to enter business; Ladefoged, not much his senior, became a world-famous phonetician, Dane/Englishman turned American and southern Californian, who was hard at work right up to the end, which happened to be another trip to India to study the phonetics of Indian languages; he suffered a minor stroke on the plane back and a fatal one in the hospital in London; despite the less than good condition of this book, a signed copy of one of his works would be of interest to collectors of twentieth-century books on phonetics, and specifically West African languages and Ladefoged's books generally; cover is green/blue with burgundy lettering, the logo of the West African Language Monograph series on the front; 252 x 167 cm;, xvii + 74 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
