About this Item
Oblong small quarto measuring 11" x 7". Black cloth over stiff paper boards with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 140 sepia-toned or black and white photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 8" x 10" with some captions. Good only album with cracked hinge, worn edges, and rubbing with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by a young woman at various summer camps in New Hampshire between 1913 and 1923. The photographs show Camp Kehonka and Camp Anawan, as well a possible other spots not captioned. Many of the campgrounds are on the banks of Lake Winnipesaukee. Most of the photos are captioned with the years 1913 and 1914 with some later dates which seem to end at 1923. The album begins with photos of a house and the New Hampshire countryside. A group of girls in their camp uniform posed on the porch of the house. Other photos show the girls posed as a group on the lawn, raising a flag, and in their tents. The girls are seen hiking, exercising, and canoeing. Other photos show candids of the girls working on basket weaving, swimming, working in a stable, and dining. Some larger, professional photographs show the girls collecting firewood, cooking outdoors, and in a large canoe. Other activities included horseback riding and basketball which can be seen here in a few action shots of girls playing a game. They are also seen in costumes performing plays and participating in a vaudeville style show. A newspaper clipping from the 1980s is laid in giving a short history of Camp Kehonka as well as a maps and printed lists of campers' names. A nice collection of photographs depicting a New Hampshire girl's camp. Seller Inventory # 419663
