About this Item
Quarto measuring 9" x 11". String-tied stiff paper boards. Contains 44 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" and 5" x 7" with captions. Very good album with some detached but present pages, chips, and tears with near fine photographs. A photo album following the Dunn family of Iowa while traveling throughout the Western United States between 1910 and the mid-1920s, along with family reunions from the 1950s. J.H. Dunn was a prominent owner of a grocery store in Corning, Iowa, his business card is featured here. The album is not in chronological order and was compiled by Dunn with humorous, sometimes long, captions. One photo from a hospital visit reads, "these are nurses that waited on me at the Ottumwa Hospital in 1912 when I had my appendix taken out …when they went to give me the antithetic the nurse wanted to know if I had any false teeth, I told her no but mabe [sic] she had aught to unscrew my cork leg. She felt both and said you haven t got no cork leg." He also writes long descriptions of places they visited. One section from a trip to Texas reads, "this bunch of pictures was taken in the canyon out of Amarillo, Texas. There is a hole in the ground in the bottom a river the coldest clear water the best you ever tasted. They have a fine farm down in the canyon. When you ride mile of level and no trees or anything then come to this canyon with trees, grass. A beautiful place." Other images feature scenes from a trip to Florida. Dunn also photographs places around his home in Iowa including the family grocery store with a horse in front. Another photo reads, "Crapo Park Burlington, Iowa where the first flag was unfurled in Iowa. Taken around 1912." Photos featuring family homes, gardens, and portraits are seen throughout the album. The latest photographs are group photographs from a family reunion. An interesting collection of photographs documenting the life and travels of an Iowa grocer. Seller Inventory # 452065
