About this Item

Description:

White vinyl spiral binder with plastic sleeves. Quarto. Contains 152 color photographs measuring 8" x 10" taken at the 30th Annual Jeepers Jamboree in 1982. A large collection of amateur color photographs with additional photographs mounted inside a clear plastic binder cover printed with the title: "30th Anniversary, Jeepers Jamboree, 1982." Old dampspots on binder and plastic sleeves, all photographs in fine condition. The Jamboree was held annually in Georgetown, California. This collection likely belonged to the late founder of the Jamboree, Mark A. Smith (1926-2012), who is featured in the large cover photograph in what appears to be the 1982 Annual Jeep Jamboree. Smith, an avid Jeeper, co-founded the Jamboree in 1953 together with the local Rotary Club at a meeting to organize a Jeep trip across the Sierras in 1982. The event was officially dubbed "Jeep Jamboree USA," and continues to this day. Shirts are, clearly, optional. The collection is comprised of snapshots taken during the event and include a number of Smith both in his role as an enthusiastic Jeeper (in denim overalls) and as event organizer (in button-down shirt and with bullhorn). Though numerous Jeep models and their drivers are featured here, the collection also covers the more playful side of the event, with a number of shots of a man napping on a felled tree and bathing-suit-clad women with big hair canoodling with their fellow Jeepers. Of course, there are loads of shots of Jeeps in action, including traversing wooded paths and crossing a shallow lake. The collection is accompanied by a few pieces of related ephemera, including a brief printed history of the Jamboree and an off-road map of the Rubicon Trail, Georgetown, California. A voluminous and amusing insight into white guy culture with generous-size images of some of the participants. Seller Inventory # 411845
