About this Item
Two photo albums. Oblong quartos measuring 10" x 7". Black wrappers. Contains 56 black and white or sepia-toned photographs measuring around 5" x 7" with captions. Albums are very good or better, the second album has detached but present front and rear wrappers with fine photographs. Two photo albums detailing a two month trip in January and February of 1913 to New Zealand, Fiji, and Hawaii. The travelers were well off Americans traveling by boat, island hopping over the two month period, including the travel writer Lewis Garrison and his wife. It appears the compiler was interested in photography and they documented the trip with a keen eye. They begin in New Zealand and the photographer captures local Maori girls over three images in swim costumes smiling and making faces at the camera with a caption that reads, "Maori girl bathing." In Fiji they photograph local flora and fauna as well as the native people. One of these photographs reads "Fijian Policeman…very intelligent and well educated." Other images show "native huts," a "native village," and "Fijians at home." One set of photos shows young Fijians on small boats "diving for coin" in Sura Harbor. This album ends with the travelers posed on board the S.S. Makura heading to Hawaii. The second album documents the Hawaii leg of this trip beginning on January 29, 1913. They started in Honolulu and stayed at the Alexander Young Hotel. The landscape of the islands is seen through the photographs including mountains and volcanos, beachs, and palm trees. One set of photos includes a grove of palm trees near Waikiki Beach. Local people are also seen throughout with images reading, "Chinese children," "Japanese woman and child," and "Japanese quarter." The travelers drove around the island of Oahu and photographed the beaches. One photo from this drive shows the travelers posed by their car captioned, "Trip around island of Oahu. 90 miles. Feb. 5, 1913 Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Garrison, Mrs. Pendleton." Towards the end of the album they include images of surfers at Waikiki Beach. They concluded their trip in February and left on the S.S. Sierra. A wonderful collection of travel photographs in 1913. Seller Inventory # 438062
