One of the most important CDV's for the 1862 International Exhibition. What made CDV's was that they were ideal for collectors as opposed to those earlier photographs printed on card stock and consequently were more durable and did not have to be pasted into a scrapbook to protect. Dickens, Longfellow, and Hans Christian Anderson were among the most popular. This is an early image and was intended for distribution at the Exhibition but this copy was purchased by the original collector in December 1864 (see verso of card) He had already been appointed Poet Laureate a decade earlier but it was here where he met Queen Victoria in April 1862. Victoria wrote in her diary, "very peculiar looking, tall, dark, with a fine head, long black flowing hair & a beard, oddly dressed, but there is no affectation about him.". Seller Inventory # 018237
