The rift between Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig was supposedly caused by Ruth's second wife, who took humbrage about a comment Gehrig's mother made about her adopted daughter; she met the married Babe in 1923, and they wed in 1929 only three months after his first wife died in a house fire, remaining married until his death in 1948; she was played by another Claire, actress Claire Trevor, in the 1948 film "The Babe Ruth Story." PS, 3¼" X 4½", n.p., n.y. [circa 1960]. Very good. Newspaper photograph, lightly age toned and with faint stain at each corner, showing Mrs. Ruth half length sandwiched between Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, "the Yankees chasing the Bambino's home run record" according to caption underneath. (Maris did break the Bambino's single season record in 1961 with 60 home runs.) She signs "Sincerely, / Mrs. Babe Ruth" in bold red ballpoint near the bottom. Mrs. Ruth's script bore a close natural resemblance to her husband's -- making this a superb example of the signature she signed on her husband's behalf on so many photographs and baseballs and which still fool collectors today. Most unusual. Bookseller Inventory # 36501
