About this Item

The original "Globe Trotter," this Croatian began a walking tour in 1901 that supposedly lasted 28 years, twice circumnavigating the world and logging more than 175,000 miles on foot; he survived by selling picture postcards of himself and lugged with him a large book which he got signed from notable figures from all walks of life from all over the world, including three U.S. presidents -- a book that eventually tipped the scales at 58 pounds and became too heavy for him to carry with him and had to be shipped to his next destination -- a book that he tried to sell to famed rare book dealer Dr. Rosenbach in the 1920s for $10,000 (he declined) and whose whereabouts today is unknown; he married in the 1910s and apparently settled down somewhere in the U.S. (perhaps Chicago). PS (verso), 3" X 5", n.p., 1922. Near fine. Image side bears a photograph of Mikulec seated on steps (which one source claims is the White House) one hand resting on a large book propped open next to him, with printed caption below reading "Joseph H. Mikulec / The Globe Trotter / Enroute since 1902 has covered over 175,000 miles / through 26 nations and collected 50,000 signatures / will write a book." Blank verso bears Mikulec's enormous 5" signature ("Joe Mikulec") in bold purple ink, with "Sincerely" penned above and "1922" below. A superb example of the product Mikulec sold to finance his bizarre quest. Strange and unusual!. Bookseller Inventory # 41561
