American composer and critic Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) was allied with the modernist movement and counted among his friends Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Aaron Copland, Igor Stravinsky, Ezra Pound, Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau. His immediate musical influences were Erik Satie and Nadia Boulanger. Thomson created music for theatre and film during the decades before the World War II. After the war he became music critic New York Herald Tribune, and became something of a mentor to a generation of younger composers, including Leonard Bernstein, Ned Roram and Paul Bowles.
