About this Item

Four scrapbooks, dedicated to the careers of serveral actors, the principal one being Julia Marlowe [Taber] (1865-1950), who was one of the most highly regarded Shakespearean and dramatic actress of the day, and Robert Taber, her husband and also a major actor. One of the albums concentrates on Edward Hugh Sottison, (1859-1933), a leading Shakespearean actor who often partnered with Marlowe. A third album covers Cleo de Merode, a French dancer, and the theatrical actresses Maxine Elliot and Julia Arthur, with a little on Sir Beerbohm Tree. Higginson (1834 - 1919) was a well-known financier and cultural leader in Boston. He was a major benefactor of Harvard University, underwriting much of the construction of Soldier's Field and the Harvard Union, among other things, and he was a founder of the Boston SymphonyOrchestra and its head for many years. He is also known to have been a friend of Julia Marlowe. It is not known whether the friendship was more than platonic, but certainly these albums are testament to more than a casual interest in the career of Marlowe. Besides many head shots of the actress in various roles, the albums include photographs, some scarce, of scenes from some of the plays. We know that the albums are not the entirety of Higginson's compilations, since we have ones numbered I, IIII, V, VI. The albums are oblong, 40 by 28 cm each. Bookseller Inventory # 003048

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
