Head-piece and tail-piece by Aubrey Beardsley. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish writer and poet who became a leading critic of English literature and society. 'Phrases and Philosophies', a collection by Wilde of aphorisms was first published in the CHAMELEON (December 1894) and later printed separately in 1903.
