About this Item

Frontispiece portraits in both volumes. Half-calf over marbled boards, marbled edges; some browning. Contemporary signature of Wm. Potter of Darley Hall on both title pages. First edition. After a brief introduction on the history of early medicine, the author details the experiences of many renown physicians, including Baillie, Monro, and Hunter, as well as those that did not necessarily practice medicine, instead leading a literary life (Armstrong and Blackmore, to name two). After a chapter on medical quackery, we are taught how to start a medical practice, which is quite interesting, as items to consider include what fees to charge, the importance of a name and a religious affiliation, and a reminder of the possibility of getting called out while attending church. A number of contemporary physicians are profiled.Winslow (1844-1913) was a psychiatrist best known for his involvement in the cases of Jack the Ripper and Georgina Weldon. He also wrote a pamphlet identifying spiritualism as a cause of insanity. Bookseller Inventory # 14003
