About this Item

12 pages testimonials; 252 pages; notes; publisher's green cloth binding, gilt lettering, with beveled edges. Former owner's name on the front flyleaf. George Napheys (1842-1876) was from Philadelphia and became a renowned medical expert and writer. Joining the Union Army during the Civil War he studied medicine earning his degree from the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia at the end of the war. Running the medical clinic of the College and publishing a series of medical articles and reports in the Surgical Reporter of Philadelphia he quickly became a leading medical expert. This led to the writing of his three medical works which he most famous for over a three year period, 'The Physical Life of Woman' being the first, which dealt with women. Followed by 'Transmission of Life' for males, and then his 'Modern Therapeutics' the same year, a technical work addressed to physicians. After traveling in Europe for several years studying and observing he returned to Philadelphia and wrote two more medical works before suffering a stroke and passing away in 1876. Napheys work 'Physical Life of Woman', written in clear English, it became the standard guide to personal hygiene and medicine for woman, clearing the field of educational works of silly texts and quacks. Contents include: The Maiden, Puberty; Love; The Wife; Pregnancy; Confinement; The Mother; The Change of Life. A very good clean copy of this important work of medicine and social history.
