About this Item

8vo. [xvi], 16, 350, 1, [2-4], 351-455, [11] pp. Folding plate, index, engraved tail-pieces and title-page vignette; faint water-stain to lower margin through p. 149. Some copies have 16 pages of ads at rear, not bound with this copy. Contemporary blind-stamped polished calf, 5 raised bands; front hinge cracked, lacks spine label. Ownership signature of "J. Coppendale, Aul. Clar. Cantab., 1743" [see provenance below]. Very good. Second edition, with additions (first published in 1713) of Derham's contribution to the Boyle Lectures. "Richard Bentley's A Confutation of Atheism from the Origin and Frame of the World (1693), George Cheyne's Philosophical Principles of Religion Natural and Revealed (1705), William Derham's Physico-Theology; or, A Demonstration of the Being and Attributes of God from His Works of Creation (1711-1712), William Whiston's Astronomical Principles of Religion Natural and Revealed (1717), and many similar works turned English Protestant thought in the direction of natural religion based on Newton's system of the world. Rational analysis of nature, they held, showed that the world cannot be explained by natural causes alone but must be the work of God. Newtonian science demonstrated the need for a Creator, who graciously sustains a world totally incapable of sustaining itself" (Deason, pp. 185-186). "The physic-theological tradition became prominent in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries through the writing of such well-known figures as Pieter van Musschenbroeck and J. Albert Favbricus in Holland, and John Ray and William Derham in England" (Ruderman, p. 357). PROVENANCE: Rev. John Coppendale was a fellow of Trinity College. His entry in Admissions to Trinity College reads: "Son of William Coppendale of Wakefield, Yorkshire. School, Wakefield (Mr. Clark). Age 17. Pensioner, January 3, 1717. Tutor, Mr. Smith, jun. [Matriculated, 1718; Scholar, 1718; B.A. 1721, Fellow, 1723; M.A. 1724. Tutor, 1725-1733; Junior Bursar, 1728-1733]" (Ball & Venn, p. 53). REFERENCES: Ball, W.W. Rouse & J.A.
