About this Item

This large, clean quarto - 8-1/2 by 11-1/8 inches, is bound in the original, publisher's beige cloth with gilt lettering on the front cover. The spine is plain, without lettering. The top one inch of the spine is torn, with some rubbing to the corners. The covers have good, unworn and unbumped edges. The front inner hinge is detached, but the covers and the spine are well attached. The pages are unnumbered, but there are 97 clean and still crisp pages with 47 full page, black and white illustrations (a page of text facing the illustration). The binding is cracked and a few pages are loose and others are detaching. The frontispiece illustration is of the "The Prince of Wales' Party". The text for this illustration starts - "You know that we have in England a good Queen named Victoria, whose husband is the Prince Albert, and whose children are the Princess Royal.". Following illustrations are titled - Rabbit Shooting, The Holy Family, The Encampment In The Desert (travelers to India going from Cairo to Suez), Napoleon Bonaparte ("What shall I tell you about this great man? His life was so eventful.", The Sleepy Servant Girl (a Nicholas Maas 1665 painting), The Wild Pony, Guy Fawkes ("In the reign of James the First, the Roman Catholics in England were treated very harshly.", Rebekah At The Well, Greenwich Pensioners, The French Stage-Coach - The Diligence, The Fiddler, The Fox-Hunt, The Bedouin Arabs, Spaniards With The Guitar, The Reading-Room At A Club, The Battle of Waterloo, Partridges And Their Young,.
