About this Item

16mo. Green cloth, gilt. xxii, 186pp. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece. Very good. Bit of inoffensive staining on pp. xvi-xxi. Tight, attractive copy of this early "Lakeside Classic," the annual keepsake given by this printer and publisher to friends and clients starting in 1903 -- this volume containing Morris Birkbeck's "Observations of an English Immigrant in 1817," William Newnham Blake's "A Tour in Southern Illinois in 1822" and Henry R. Schoolcraft's "A Journey Up the Illinois River in 1821." This exceptional copy has been signed and inscribed by the publisher ("With the kind regards of / Thomas E Donnelley") in blue ink on an inner flyleaf and has an interesting provenance, coming from the library of Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (born 1930) of Illinois, and came to him from his father, Governor Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), two-time presidential candidate. Early Lakesides from their "green period" -- the first thirty years -- have become quite scarce in recent years. Giltstamping bright and lovely. Bookseller Inventory # 39083
