About this title

Synopsis:

Piero della Francesca has long been admired as one of the greatest of all Renaissance painters. Much archival and technical work has been done concerning him and his work (including the restoration of his great fresco cycle in Arezzo and of many of his other paintings and frescoes). Carlo Bertelli, presents both a synthesis of recent documentary and scientific research and the reflections of his own lifetime's study of Piero's work. The book incorporates a full-scale biography of the artist, which locates Piero's work in relation to that of his contemporaries, and goes on to analyze each of his surviving paintings. It concludes with a full catalogue of his works, and is illustrated in colour throughout with reproductions of the newly restored panels and frescoes.

About the Author:

The authors are all world renowned experts of Italian Renaissance painting: Carlo Bertelli, visiting professor at the Universities of Berkeley, Geneve, Losanna, Venice and Milan, in 1999 gave the famous Mellon Lectures at National Gallery in Washington. His previous book Piero della Francesca (translated by Edward Farrelly, Yale University Press, 1992) has been a great success and it is sold out. Anna Maria Maetzke, is superintendent of Arezzo and leading expert on Piero della Francesca. Marilyn Aronberg Lavin teaches at Princeton University. She has written several books on Italian Renaissance painting and Piero della Francesca. Her book The Place of Narrative: Mural Painting in Italian Churches, 431-1600 AD has won the Chicago Women in Publishing award competition in 1991.
