About this Item

Self-published, printed by the Kansan Printing House, Concordia, Kansas, 1962. Light blue stapled wrappers, 22 pages. Sunfaded around the outer edges, former owner's name written on the upper corner of the front cover, clean and tight interior. Book written by the wife of a Kansas doctor who first received his degree in homeopathic medicine and later a degree as a Physician and Surgeon. After their move to Norton, Kansas, in 1905, Mrs. Lathrop served as his assistant and "nurse". In Kansas he passed the pharmacists' exam so that he could dispense his own medicines at the drugstore he owned. He also established a hospital and nurses' training school. Throughout Dr. Lathrop's career, Mrs. Lathrop shared her husband's interest in medicine. She writes: "Medicines on the frontier fell into three classes: those prescribed by a regular physician, patent medicines, and folk cures.this essay will be concerned almost entirely with the last of these.".
