About this Item

No publisher, place or date. (Perhaps Amherst or Portsmouth, NH): 1807. Pamphlet, single stitched in the center left margin. Lacking any wraps that were issued. Pagination runs 161-196. A single issue of this magazine devoted primarily to religious items. This number features several letters from Gideon Blackburn to Dr. Morse regarding the origin and progress of a religious mission to the Cherokee Indians. Apparently begun in 1790, Blackburn describes his efforts to educate the Cherokees, with a slight condescending tone to their culture. Blackburn founded a ministry in Maryville Tennessee, establishing two schools for Cherokee boys in the early 1800s in that area (see Wikipedia). Also present is a sketch of the character of Samuel Moody, further extracts from the diary of Reverend Ivory Hovey, as well as a few theological/philosophical essays. The Piscataqua Evangelical Magazine ran for three volumes, providing a publication venue for New Hampshire and Maine ministers and religious figures. GOOD condition, ex-library, with scattered stamping and some handwritten library notations throughout. Heavy dampstain along the upper left portion and spine. Light offsetting, moderate uneven darkening and scattered soiling. Pages curled at the corners, with some creasing, and a few with tears at the upper corners. Sabin 63024.
