About this Item

ANONYMOUS. A Plain Guide to Baptism; Being a Short Treatise upon Subjects and Mode. By a Servant of Jesus Christ, Who has often been invited to preach to Baptist Churches, but always debarred from their communion!!! [8 lines scripture] Boston: Press of Peirce & Parker, No. 9, Cornhill. 1832. Duodecimo.[ Pamphlet in probably later plain paper wrapper, untrimmed with page edges tattered, light to medium foxing, small tear in inside margin of title, 3cm tear in text of one leaf repaired with archival rag paper. Collation: 1-26, 32. Pagination: (1) title, (1) copyright, [3]-28pp. OCLC locates: Emory U Pitts; U Ill.; S Bapt Theol Sem; New Orleans Bapt Theol Sem; Amer Antq Soc; Kent State U; Presb Hist Soc. Amer. Imprints 32-14283 adds Cong. Libr Boston; Zion Research Libr Brookline; Brown U. The anonymous author (probably a Congregationalist) begins: "This treatise is designed to present in a concise form and plain manner, some of the most correct and convincing views of the subject of Baptism. And now understand what the subject in debate is. It is not whether adult believers, who have not received baptism, should be baptized. Nor is it, whether baptism by immersion is an acceptable and valid mode. Upon these points, we have no dispute with our Baptist brethren. But what I shall endeavor to establish is this: That the children of believers should be dedicated to God in baptism; and That baptism by sprinkling is a Scriptural and valid mode."--p.3.
