This scholarly work includes a short biography of all the contributors, an extensive bibliography, and an excellent index. There are 59 illustrations, 21 figures, and 15 tables. There are no color illustrations. There is no dust jacket. The preface says this book "deals with a thousand year period of culture in the Great Plains region prior to the arrival of Europeans in the sixteenth century. The organizer and editor are ethnohistorians and the other contributors are archaeologists and prehistorians."

About the Author:

Karl H. Schlesier is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas. A noted authority on Plains Indians, he is the author of The Wolves of Heaven: Cheyenne Shamanism, Ceremonies, and Prehistoric Origins and editor of Plains Indians, A.D.  500–1500: The Archaeological Past of Historic Groups, both published by the University of Oklahoma Press.
