Engraving. The first issue. This is William Faden's 1777 republication of Scull and Heap's 1752 map of Philadelphia. The 1752 map was virtually the only one of the city available at the outbreak if the Revolution. It was perhaps best known for its "Perspective View of the State House" (Independence Hall), the earliest printed view of this great American landmark. The original Scull and Heap version is so rare as to be virtually unobtainable, but in 1777, because of the great interest generated in the city by the signing there of the Declaration of Independence, this revised version was published by Faden in London. Faden's version contains updated detail, and the view of Independence Hall has been moved from the top to the bottom margin of the map. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description 1777. FADEN, William, engraver. A Plan of the City and Environs of Philadelphia Survey'd by N. Scull and G. Heap. London: W. Faden, 1777. 1 sheet folio, 24-5/8 x 18-1/2 inches. Framed. A few very tiny stains at foot of sheet, not affecting map, else a very good or better copy. Although already 25 years out of date, this map was one of only two maps of Philadelphia available at the start of the Revolutionary War. Faden issued this in March 1777, six months before Philadelphia came into the military campaign. "Faden was careful to give credit on his plate to the pioneer American mapmakers. Instead of placing the elevation of the Statehouse across the top, as Scull and Heap had done, Faden inserted it at the bottom without setting it off by boundary lines. Nor was he slavish in copying the country homes; rather, he made an effort at updating the Philadelphia environs." Snyder, City of Independence. This is the third state of Faden's map with "Billingsport Island" below Hog Island, joined by cheveaux de fises with south bank of the river. Snyder, City of Independence, 47B.
