8vo (20.0 x 11.5 cm) Original blindstamped brown pebble cloth. Spine laid down with new hinges, preserving original end papers. Some minor ink and water stains on covers. Collation: [1] [9]-133 pp. + 6 plates with plate I as frontispiece and diagrams in the text. Moderate foxing to frontispiece and first 12 lls. Occasional minor edge foxing at fore edge of text and plate lls. Nichol, was an educator, astronomer and adminidtrator who did much to popularize astronomy in the 19th century through lectures and writings such as Views of the Architectue of the Heavens (1837) and System of the World (1846). He was instrumental in raising money by public subscription for the new Horselethill observatory, Glasgow, which was completed in 1841. (ODNB) The present scarce work on Neptune was written along with several other astronomy books to clear debts incurred books (Wellcome, rec. no. 1117794). Bookseller Inventory # 000082
