About this Item

BRUCE, Philip A[lexander]. The Plantation Negro As A Freeman. Observations on His Character, Condition, and Prospects of Virginia. NY & London: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1889. 1st ed. Part of the "Questions of the Day" series, as indicated on the front cover, endpapers, and title page. Small 8vo, 262pp., plus [4]pp. ads. Orig. burgundy cloth. Wear to spine ends and corners with minor loss to head of spine; a bit of light damping to front board; hinges cracked internally; still a very good copy. First edition of the respected Virginia historian's first book. Bruce presents a dim view of the freed slaves: morally deficient, inclined towards criminality, intellectually limited, difficult to educate, and useful only as agricultural laborers. The author views these traits as endemic to the race, and thus despairs of the future progress of African Americans. Work, p. 588. Haynes 2340. Bookseller Inventory # 53326
