About this Item

The immensely talented and prolific Noel Coward is sometimes wrongly disparaged as a purveyor of frothy yarns of life among the rich and irresponsible, but in fact he remains one of the UK's leading 20th Century playwrights. This volume includes, "Private Lives, "Design for Living," "Cavalcade," Bitter Sweet," Post-Mortem," "The Vortex," and "Hay Fever." Coward's importance lies in the point he often makes, and most eloquently in the exquisite "Private Lives," magnificently revived in London and New York in 2001 and 2002, that life is basically tragic and happiness is short-lived, so make the most of it while you can. As Elyot says to Amanda, "Come and kiss me, darling, before your body rots, and worms pop in and out of your eye sockets." This copy is in bright green boards with gilt lettering, spine soiled. Garden City logo on front board. Text block firm and tight, green topstain, some browning on ffep but pages unmarked. No DJ. Corners unbumped, roughcut pages. There are many copies on the used book market, and this one, although showing its age, does not have that "tattered" look. Bookseller Inventory # 22470
