About this Item

[Diamond Type Edition] London: William Pickering, 1825. Nine volumes, 16mo. (approx. 2 by 3-1/2 inches), bound in original full linen, with paper spine labels, all except for Vol.2, which is bound in original red publisher's cloth, ornately stamped in blind and gold, and with all edges gilt. Inner hinges cracked in Vol. 1, but covers still holding. Spines faded, and paper labels quite worn, with portions missing from each. This copy is one that was issued without the engraved illustrations, but does feature a beautiful series of miniature engraved headpieces throughout. From the library of noted American book collector Barton Currie, with his leather bookplate in Vol. 1. Keynes p.88; Jaggard p. 516. One of the smallest, earliest, and best-printed miniature editions of the great bard ever published, and a rather incredible achievement in typesetting and printing. McKerrow tells us the first cloth bindings appeared in England in 1822, and that these earliest cloth bindings had printed labels of paper until in 1832 a method was devised for lettering in gold directly on the cloth. That would seem to indicate our cloth bindings are among the earliest, and that the odd Vol. 2 which also bears the date 1825, may actually be of a later date. William Pickering (1796-1854) was a London publisher who began a successful collaboration with Charles Whittingham of the Chiswick Press in 1829, and became one of the most successful publishers of his day. His imprints are prized for their tasteful design and (for the period) exceptional presswork. Pickering was the first to use cloth-covered boards for bindings, something that completely revolutionized the industry and is still the standard to this day. Bookseller Inventory # 7733
