After vol. 1, the title pages read "Plays of William Shakespeare with Notes by Johnson and Steevens." Bound (in Petersburg, VA, according to bindery label) in marbled paper over boards with quarter leather spine & corners. Gold lettering on spine. Fourteen vols. of the 17-volume set, lacking vols. 4 (LLL; Much Ado; Merch of V), 6 (Taming; Winter's T; C of Errors), & 14 (Julius C; Lear). Foxing throughout, heavy especially on the prelims. Moderate rubbing of exteriors & wear to top & foot of spines. Anomalies presumably caused in the binding process: vol. 3 opens with p. 17 (no sign of excisions); vol. 5 lacks at least one page of commentary following the play text; in vol. 7, the leaf giving the Dramatis Personae for Macbeth is detached. The final volume concludes with a lengthy Glossorial Index. All in all a fair to good partial set. Heavy -- Priority Mail would cost extra. (Delivery Confirmation number sent for domestic orders.).
