About this Item

This is a 2 volume First English Edition in 3/4 brown leather, combed boards and endpapers. Missing any spine lettering. Beautiful hand laid paper, no foxing. Pierce Butler's copy with his bookplate. James Gates Percival (1795 - 1854) was an American poet, born at Berlin, Connecticut. He had also a reputation as a geologist. His poetic works include Prometheus and The Dream of a Day (1843). Percival assisted Noah Webster in revising and proofreading his dictionary 1827-28; was state geologist of Connecticut (1835-38) and Wisconsin (1855-56). In 1820 he went to Charleston, South Carolina, with the intention of following his profession, but happening to insert some fugitive pieces of poetry of extraordinary beauty in one of the gazettes, he was soon called forth as a poet, and the following summer having returned to his native village, where he still resides, he published a collection of his early compositions.
