About this Item

First Printing (no later printings noted) of the poet's first U.S. publication, with no equivalent English edition. Tall 8vo: 218pp. Publisher's reddish-orange cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in gilt, title page printed in red and black, without the dust jacket. Just about Fine, with brief wear to cover tips and slight toning to the wove paper. Bloomfield and Mendelson A7. Auden thought readers should confront the poems themselves, so he refused to title his early collections, giving this label instead to three separate and distinct publications. The first was privately printed in 1928 by Auden's friend, the poet Stephen Spender, in an edition of "about 45 copies" (according to the limitation page), and is one of the great rarities of modern literature (Bloomfield and Mendelson A1). The second, published by Faber & Faber, in 1930, in an edition of 1000 copies, reprinted only several poems from the 1928 version, but included the poet's first dramatic work, Paid on Both Sides (Bloomfield and Mendelson A2). Finally, the third collection, published by Random House in 1934, added to the 1930 collection two highly influential previously published poems, The Orators and The Dance of Death. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Bookseller Inventory # BB0994
