About this Item

First Impression. Tall, slim 8vo: 70pp. Publisher's French blue cloth, spine lettered in citron, typographic dust jacket, printed in brown, black, yellow and sea-green, priced 21s. Fine, square and tight, in a Fine jacket. Signed by the poet on the title page, with a signed personal presentation on the front fly leaf: "For Eleanor-affectionate / wishes and grateful / remembrances of all / the Hartford frolics / All Souls day-AL / 1974" With a correction to line 11, p. 19, in the poet's hand, changing 'significant' to 'insignificant.'. Rowse was a "twentieth century academic at the University of Oxford best known for his work on Elizabeth I and Shakespeare . . . Complex, brilliant, and irascible, he was an obsessive writer, whose achievements radically reshaped the modern understanding of Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Age. . . . Despite his immersion in academic life at Oxford, Rowse never forgot his Cornish background. When he retired, he returned to Cornwall, living alone in his large house overlooking St. Austell Bay. During the 1960s, he travelled extensively in America, where he lectured and conducted research in the Huntington Library in Pasadena, California. (The Literary Encyclopedia) N. B.
