About this Item

Octavo hardcover in dark olive green cloth lettered in gilt. Second printing, sma e month and year as the first. Top edge gilt. xx+ 208 pp. with index of first lines. A tight, clean very good example, some dulling to the spine lettering; Clippings of the March 20, 1929 New York Times book review by Mark Van Doren ard affixed to the rear endpaper and rear pastedown. Collection of previous unpublished Emily Dickinson poems, assembled from her manuscripts; her sister Lavinia chose to withhold these pieces from previous publication after the poet's death in 1886. Emily had left express instructions with her sister to burn all her correspondence after her death, which Lavinia did, but there were no such explicit instructions regarding her noebooks and various other scraps of writing. An internal family squabble kept most of these from publication in any form until at least 1914 and thereafter, the two branches of the family isued various collections and pieces until 1945.
