About this Item

[AMERICAN REVOLUTION]. Poems Fit for A Bishop; Which Two Bishops Will Read. An American Prayer. Address to Religion. Saul at Endor, An Ode. London. 1780. [2],13pp. Quarto. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Old ex-lib. stamp on titlepage. Minor foxing and soiling. Good. ESTC T54975. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 80-63. SABIN 63615. THE CRITICAL REVIEW, OR ANNALS OF LITERATURE. (London. 1780.) pp.155-56. Three pro-British poems, praying for both peace and success of the British army in the conflict with her American colonies. A footnote in the first poem, "An American Prayer," indicates that the poem was written "about three years ago on the day appointed for imploring the divine blessing on the British arms in the American civil war." A contemporary literary critique in THE CRITICAL REVIEW, OR ANNALS OF LITERATURE reads: "Our readers will see by the title-page, which is rather quaint and affected, from what quarter these verses come, and that they are what may be properly termed party poetry. The American Prayer, however, has some good lines in it. The other little poems are below mediocrity." ESTC records only a handful of copies. Bookseller Inventory # 54643
