About this Item

Newly Decorated by Claud Lovat Fraser. London: The Poetry Bookshop (1922). Octavo, quarter cloth and printed boards. 50 pages, illustrated with line drawings by Claud Lovat Fraser. Printed by Harold Curwen at the Curwen Press. Covers lightly worn, with spine faded, but still a very good copy. Harold Curwen and the British illustrator, Claud Lovat Fraser (1890-1921), comprised a mutual admiration society: Fraser became an enthusiast for Curwen's bold and imaginative ideas on printing, while Curwen admired Fraser's work so much that he employed him to illustrate several of the Press's books and to design patterned papers, borders, and other items used widely by the Curwen Press. Fraser's designs were used to illustrate A. E. Housman's A Shropshire Lad, and these designs were inexplicably rejected by the poet. Curwen used them as stock blocks for much of his commercial work, and it is possible that some of them were used in the present work. "He developed a style of drawing and of illustration in the tradition of the chapbook.and among his most striking works are the rhyme sheets he drew for Harold Monro's Poetry Bookshop." (Houfe, Simon: "Dict. of 19th Century British Book Illustrators."). Bookseller Inventory # 4619
