12mo. Later decorated paper over paste boards; 174pp; title ornament; head- and tail-pieces; initials. Toning to covers; brief tear to front endpaper; text lightly toned but quite fresh, free of library or other markings. HEINKE, (Bibliographia Halleriana) 71. Decidedly uncommon first edition in Italian of Haller's poems, the first collected edition of which was published in Berne (in German) in 1741. Haller (1708-1777) is best known as an anatomist and medical illustrator; his "Icones Anatomicae" is considered by Choulant to be "always.the main source of information for accurate anatomic studies, especially of the arteries and the viscera." But in his lifetime Haller was equally well-known as a man of letters, and his long ode to the Swiss Alps, "Die Alpen" (collected here as "Le Alpi") is one of the major poems of the Swiss Enlightenment. Preceded by several German-language editions and a French translation (1760); an English translation did not appear until 1798. Of this Italian-language edition, OCLC finds only 5 locations.
