Title: Poetical Trifles. By the Late Right ...
Publication Date: 1842
DALLAS, SIR ROBERT. Poetical Trifles. By the Late Right Honourable Lord Chief Justice Dallas. London: Printed for private circulation. [1842?] vii, , 97, p. Full mid-nineteenth-century morocco, stamped in gold. Marginal dampstain throughout, some foxing and soiling. A good copy only, but a fine Dallas family association copy. On the front flyleaf is a presentation inscription from the book's editor, Lady Giustina Dallas, to Anne Hook, dated 1842. Beneath this is the ownership signature of James Dallas, dated 1884. Neatly mounted to the next flyleaf is a partly printed legal form, dated 1823 and signed by Robert Dallas, requesting an attorney to call at Dallas's house in Bloomsbury Square. A privately printed volume of poetry by the deceased chief justice of the common pleas, edited and seen through the press by the author's widow, Lady Giustina (Davidson) Dallas. While the British Library Catalogue dates the work "[1825?]" and OCLC follows, the book was printed by Bradbury and Evans, who didn't go into business until 1831. The Bodleian gives the date "[1845?]." Based on the inscription in this copy, we feel confident in supplying a printing date of about 1842. The work includes Dallas's famous epigram on Edmund Burke, his opponent in the impeachment trial of Warren Hastings: "Oft have I wonder'd why on Irish ground No poisonous reptile ever yet was found; Reveal'd the secret stands of Nature's work-- She saved her venom to create a Burke.".
