About this Item

Complete 2-volume set. Small 8vo. Original heavily blind-embossed green cloth with spine gilt lettering and extensive decorations and front board pictorial giltstamping. 404pp, 471pp. Tissue-guarded frontispieces and illustrations. Good plus. Both volumes edgeworn, mainly at head and tail of spines, with some foxing to preliminary leaves; contemporary ownership signature in each voluem; Volume 1 front flyleaf has large chip at each corner and Volume 2 front flyleaf a single upper corner chip -- but overall tight, clean and attractive, internally very good. Nice later printing of the collected verse of this popular Scottish poet, editor and writer of hymns (1771-1854), issued in four editions between 1828 and 1854. Reverend Rufus W. Griswold provides the "Memoir of the Author" that opens the first volume. The striking giltstamped image of a bare-chested seaman flinging a grappling hook with rope attached at a water-spouting whale graces the front board of each volume. Montgomery fishing verse is quoted in "Moby Dick" -- Melville was well familiar with him and appreciated his whaling imagery. Bookseller Inventory # 41218
