About this Item

first edition, so stated, from the library of the anthropologist and Cherokee student, William H. Gilbert, with his pencilled marginal notes and underlining; laid in is a review of Wardell's book that Gilbert wrote at the University of Tennessee in summer 1938, a 2-page blue-ink carbon copy typescript; inscription rubbed out on front free endpaper, paste-downs and edges show foxing, some shelfwear, one corner bumped, sunfading (especially evident on the front where an adjacent smaller book was shelved, which prevented a large rectanglar area from fading, else tight and in relatively good condition, overall rating Good; no dj; the first edition of this title from 1938 is hard to find, very few copies are still extant; it would be of interest to collectors of books on the Cherokee and on New World Indians generally, especially those who were relatively successful in emulating and subsequently rivaling the Europeans; cloth covers are orange with a large black rectangle and silver lettering on the spine, embossed seal of the Cherokee Nation on the front; 8vo - 9 1/4 inches high, vi + 383 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
