Book Description Philp & Solomons, Washington, DC: ., 1866. 128 p. Double column. Thin 8vo. 240 mm. Original full cloth binding. Hardbound. Prior to assuming the job as Clerk of the House of Representatives, McPherson had been a prominent newspaperman, editing papers in Lancaster, Gettysburg and, later, the Pittsburgh Daily Times. He owned property in Gettysburg, and much of the first day of fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg took place on his property, thereafter known as McPherson's Ridge. McPherson also wrote 'The Political History of the United States of America During the Great Rebellion' (1864) and 'The Political History of the United States of America During the Period of Reconstruction' (1871). This piece is a solid contemporary source of information on Reconstruction. Especially interesting are the accounts of Legislation Respecting Freedmen (former slaves); and the political manouevers around the soon to be impeached President Andrew Johnson. W29.
