About this Item

Small 8vo. Wrappers. 19pp. Very good. Slight soiling to outer wrappers and light vertical fold (fully flattened), else a bright, fresh copy. Early in the war Frank Key Howard (grandson of Francis Scott Key) was arrested at Lincoln's order and held without writ of habeas corpus; in 1863 he published his irate "Fourteen Months in American Bastiles." Cromwell sympathizes with Howard's indignity, but offers a reasoned explanation for the necessity of detaining certain persons. Interestingly, page 6 bears a small inked editorial correction in the margin, while pages 11 and 18 each bear two crossouts and word substitutions in the margin (mainly tense and pronoun changes). We've been unable to locate exemplars of Cromwell's handwriting to determine authorship of these corrections, but it's quite likely these markings are those either of Cromwell himself or of the pamphlet's editor. Quite an intriguing copy. First edition. SABIN 17605. Bookseller Inventory # 13343
