About this title

These pioneering essays provide a unique study of the development of political ideas in Ireland from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. The book breaks away from the traditional emphasis in Irish historiography on the nationalism/unionism debate to focus instead on previously neglected areas such as the role of the Scottish Enlightenment and early Irish socialism and conservatism. A wide range of original primary sources are used from pamphlets to journalism, devotional tracts to poetry.

About the Author:

D. George Boyce is Professor of Politics at the University College of Swansea. He is the author of Nationalism in Ireland (Routledge, 1991) and co-editor of Parnell in Perspective (Routledge, 1991). Robert Eccleshall is Professor and Head of the Department of Politics and Vincent Geoghegan is Lecturer in the Department of Politics, both at the Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Robert Eccleshall is the author of English Conservatism since the Restoration (Unwin Hyman, 1990). Vincent Geoghegan is the author of Utopianism and Marxism (Methuen, 1987).
