Poor women! was Hoult's first published book. Laid into this copy is a one-page typed letter signed by Hoult thanking an unnamed correspondent for their review and noting a correction that might make it to the US edition: "I am afraid there is not much chance of extra editions here materializing." Contrary to her prediction, Poor women! enjoyed critical success and saw a second printing, with Hoult going on to write 28 books total, but she has since become an obscure author, and all but one of her books are out of print.
