Description:

Pope Pius XI. Ambrogio Damiani Achille Rati, Pope (1922-1939), signed the Laternan Treaty with Mussolini in 1929 establishing Vatican City, later denounced anti-Semitism, Communism and Nazism in encyclicals. Beautiful 6" x 0" sepia photograph signed with a lengthy holograph inscription on the oversized mount (14" x 23") to Sacred Heart University in Milan. Signed "Pius P P. XI" in closing. Mount bears the official papal seal and photographic stamp. Unexamined out of period wood frame, some dampstaining along bottom of mat barely touching a single letter and a portion of the seal, single horizontal crease with some crackling at left, otherwise good.
