Synopsis: Book by Hicks, Roger W.
From Library Journal:
These two titles from seasoned automotive writer Hicks are in the familiar tradition of automobile histories written in homage to specific cars. True to that tradition, these large-format books are liberally dosed with color photographs and a prose style intended to evoke nostalgia from anyone who ever owned or fantasized owning either car. Mustang describes the birth, development, and current state of the still popular Ford as it nears its 30th anniversary, a benchmark that few American marques achieve. The roles of such prominent figures as Lee Iacocca are included, as are discussions of the many concessions to management that too often compromised the car. Special standout models, like the Shelby Mustangs, are also featured. Porsche reads more like a brief biography of Ferdinand Porsche, whose personal history is ultimately the history of the car which bears his name (as well as that of Volkswagen). Major production models are discussed as are many of the experimental prototypes which generally became the impetus for successful production models. A concluding chapter documents some of the enormous success achieved by Porsche in international racing. Both books will probably be appreciated more by performance enthusiasts than by nostalgia buffs, as the majority of model descriptions are heavy with technical data and esoteric terminology, much of which will mean little to browsers lacking in mechanical background. Hicks's British roots also surface; there are terms that will be unknown to many readers. These books are neither the first works on these cars, nor should they be the last. Public libraries should acquire as needed.
