About this Item

Engraving from the atlas volume of Duflot de Mofras' Exploration du Territoire de L'Oregon, des Californies et de la Mer Vermeille. Engraved by S. Jacobs. Sheet size: 20 1/4 x 12 5/8". Frame size: 30 x 20 1/2". Inventory#: p1934pfat. This is the finest cartographical record of San Francisco Bay on the eve of the American occupation. The topography of the bay is already well understood, and most of its more prominent features are easily recognizable. The lower part of the sheet is devoted to an inset plan of the Golden Gate ("Entree du Port de San Francisco"), on which the forerunner of the modern metropolis of San Francisco is clearly shown. This is the "Puebla de la Yerba Buena", a small cluster of buildings grouped at the foot of Telegraph and Nob Hills (both unnamed.) Note the presence of many now familiar names throughout the bay area: "Alcatraces", "S. Raphael", "San Leandro", "Pte. Sauseleto", "Pta. de los Lobos", and many more. Wagner calls Duflot de Mofras' work: "One of the twenty rarest and most important.relating to the history of California". Bookseller Inventory # 001934
