About this Item

This is the only book ever translated by Henry James, and he contributes an eight page preface at the start. Alphonse Daudet was a French novelist (1840-1897) of the Naturalist school, known for his keen renderings of characters and incidents, most of which were autobiographical or belonged to the biographies of people he knew. This novel is one of the most notable that deal with life in Provence. It has numerous illustrations by Rossi, Myrbach, Montegut, Bieler and Montenard, title leaf printed in orange and black, original decorated blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in silver and gold, other edges rough trimmed. First edition, first binding. Although the title page is dated 1891, the Harper edition was published 30 October 1890 and preceded Sampson Low's British edition which was published in November 1890. The English translation was published before the original French edition. One of the "unforgettable Tartarin burlesques" by which Daudet is remembered" (along with his sketches of Provençal life) - Harvery and Heseltine (eds), The Oxford Companion to French Literature, p. 188. BAL 10502 (binding A). Edel and Laurence B6. A tight, bright, near fine copy, in remarkable condition for a book this old. The binding and text block are heavy and firm; there is slight wear at the corners and top and bottom of the spine. Top pages gilt-stained. The title is in gil letters on royal blue background, and enclosed in a decorative silver icon. Handsome and collectable. Bookseller Inventory # 140223
